Hero House Happily Headed (H)everywhere …

June 10th, 2010

Arcana Writer Justin Aclin interview:

“I’ve always wanted to write comic books, and Twisted ToyFare scratched the itch a little bit, but I still wanted to do something a little more serious. So I came up with the idea for Hero House back in 2004 and wrote the script, then I found my artist, Mike Dimayuga, on a comic art message board. Once Mike came aboard the project, we made a pitch packet, which was basically five pages of the comic, plus an outline of the entire story, and I went to Wizard World Chicago that year and started pitching it around to the various publishers there. A few months later, Arcana Comics agreed to publish the series, and Mike and I went to work in earnest on getting the four issues done.”

Howard Lovecraft Review and Corrective Measures Vol. 2 Preview:

May 25th, 2010

Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom

And now a Howard Lovecraft review from Publisher’s Weekly:

The latest in the fertile field of Lovecraft spinoffs follows a young Howard, aka H.P., Lovecraft through an adventure in a dangerous netherworld. The plot takes elements of Lovecraft’s actual childhood, including his father’s nervous breakdown, and uses them to introduce readers to tropes in Lovecraft’s work. The young Howard goes through a portal to another universe, where a mysterious book holds the key to freeing a society of children from an evil power that has encased them in a frozen, hostile world. Howard takes on the quest with the help a giant squid, facing danger and finding many of his assumptions are false. A chilly watercolor palate links the artwork of the various artists–each chapter has a different one–and the emotions on Howard’s face become more complex as the story grows darker. Although marketed for all ages, the book, will likely appeal more to younger readers, who should find the plot’s twists and turns and the young protagonist appealing. Older readers and hardcore Lovecraft fans may be put off by the juvenile dialogue and some of the panels that play up the cuteness, rather than the horror, of the story. (Mar.)

Dragon’s Lair @ The Comic Addiction!

May 22nd, 2010

By Chris Partin

If you know anything about Don Bluth and his role in American animation, then his co-creation with Gary Goldman – Dragon’s Lair should be something you’re well aware of, too. Dragon’s Lair the video game first hit the masses in 1983, back when I was only 9 years old. I remember going to the arcade every day for hours when my family took our summer trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. I would play this game until my parents had to drag me kicking and screaming away from it. By far – this game, and its successor, Space Ace, we’re my favorites growing up.

In 2003, CrossGen Publishing released the first issue of Don Bluth’s Dragon’s Lair and all of those fond memories came flooding back. The miniseries was based off of the original game’s story of Dirk the Daring’s attempt to rescue the Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe. Only three issues into its run, CrossGen began having financial problems and eventually closed down without seeing the miniseries completed. In 2006, Arcana Studios collected the previously released three issues as well as the three unpublished issues as well as a bonus story.

This collection is a great looking hardcover. The page art by Fabio Languna is so close to Bluth’s style, but just different enough to not be an exact copy. I think the art alone makes this hardcover worth picking up for any comic book art fan.

COMIC/GRAPHIC NOVEL REVIEW: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES

May 9th, 2010

Written by Dwight L. MacPherson and published by Arcana Comics in 2008, Dead Men Tell No Tales boldy goes where few Graphic Novels do…to the land of pirates.

A little background:

MacPherson has had a fascination with pirates since he first read ‘Treasure Island’ at nine years old. Throughout his life he has collected a large amount of pirate literature, which eventually led him to writing the pirate epic, which encompasses 12 issues.

After many rejections, Arcana Comics picked up the tale and the rest is pirate history.

Loosely Based Reviewed @ Jazma Online

May 3rd, 2010

Comments: Duncan Moreno is an author and his life starts to get a bit strange. Something definitely is happening and it is not normal. Black Cassidy the evil villian from the book is he real or not?

Well this starts out as a kind of copy kat of the dark Half by stephen King. Or a few other movies have used similar ideas. Than we see there are some differences. Duncan’s life has taken a turn that is unusual some of the people he now talks to are not really people but they want to be. Trevor Cassidy will do anything for that. Trevor and Duncan do have a strange relationship.
It all comes to a head in one bloody rough and tumble fight between three combatants that really have nothing to lose.

Christopher Judge talks Paradox Movie!

April 21st, 2010

Christopher Judge is best known for playing the alien, Teal’c, on Stargate SG-1. What you may not know is he has done a lot of voice over work, as well:

•Magneto on X-Men: Evolution

•Zodak on He-Man

•Simon Grey on Action Man (UK)

•Jericho on Turok (VG)

•D-Mob in Def Jam Vendetta (VG)

He’s got some new voice over work going in some version of an animated Deadpool. He starts that on Wednesday and when I asked him what character he was playing, he said “I’ve forgotten”. The deal is still being finalized but he says he plays one of the leads for “Deadpool 2″. I didn’t have the heart to tell him the first incarnation came from Hulk Vs but I don’t think it would have mattered either. He is definitely a fan of comic books though.

Judge has a new movie coming out called Paradox. It is based off the short series from Arcana Comics.

Burn @ AICN!

April 20th, 2010

null

Anyone who’s seen Camilla d’Errico’s artwork at a convention or at her website would probably think they’d know what to expect from any kind of comic work she’d produce. And with her previous effort, MAKE 5 WISHES, co-produced or produced for Avril Levigne, they’d be just about right in their assumptions. d’Errico’s art consists of sweet looking anime/manga nymphettes in gorgeous and sublime settings. It’s very much what you’d see in a lot of anime artbooks out there but d’Errico’s art goes beyond much of what the typical anime artist provides. Yes, much of it is very derivative of much of what we’ve all seen in the scores of art that’s come from the shores of Japan but there’s an artistry and an originality there that makes her more than just an average Ameri-manga artist. d’Errico’s art is just that…art. Not to say that anime/manga artwork isn’t, but there does come a point after being subjected to pages of pages of manga and hours and hours of anime that it does start to come across as a bit…I dunno…factory farmed. One look at d’Errico’s work and you can see it’s anything but made with an assembly line mentality.

Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom receives 4 out of 5 Stars!

April 14th, 2010

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Comments: Howard is a little boy with an insane dad and a mother who has to look after Howard while his dad is locked away. Howard reads his dad’s diary. It is about R’yleh a hidden Kingdom. As Howard speaks the unsanctified words of a unsanctified language things start happening and turning weird.

The art is simple but eye catching. Howard is illustrated as a little boy with big childish eyes. He seems innocent but there is something about him that seems different.
