Mark Poulton ON CBR’s Show Us Your Shelf Porn!

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means. Yes, it’s Shelf Porn time once again! Our Guest this week is Mark Poulton, the VP of Operations at Arcana Comics, as well as the writer/co-creator of Koni Waves. Since Waves takes place in Hawaii, Poulton decided to build a tiki bar in his basement to display his collectibles.

Before we get to Mark’s collection, though, let me offer my regular reminder. Sure, you may be saying “My collection is nowhere near as awesome as the ones featured here. There’s no way I should send my pics in.” You know what I say to that negative thinking? Fiddlesticks! Send me photos of your collection, be it large or small to cmautnerATcomcastDOTnet and we’ll post ‘em with love no matter what.

Now, here’s Mark to take us on a tour of his home …

Tom Akel Goes “Anywhere”

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

If blessed with the ability to instantly transport to anywhere on Earth, it would be nice to think that one might use that power for something more substantial than simply popping over to India for a curry. But then again, real adventuring might cut into video game time. Such are the challenges facing Dust and Wormhole, the heroes of Comedy Central producer Tom Akel’s “Anywhere,” a six-issue miniseries debuting in November from Arcana. Akel co-wrote the book with Eric Mahoney, and Alan Quah provides the art. CBR News caught up with Akel for a quick chat about the series.

Akel described “Anywhere” as “the equivalent of a sitcom centered around 3 protagonists in a world of superbeings, and what happens to the ones who aren’t motivated to do much more than anyone else their age. It’s for readers of comics like ‘Howard the Duck’ and ‘Hero Squared,’ or who watch shows like ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’ and ‘Squidbillies.’ The humor is a bit sophomoric, and all in good fun.”

Mark Poulton On Creating Comic Books

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Originally posted on Arcon Citadel:

While searching the internet for more information about making web comics, I stumbled upon Mark Poulton’s Creating Comic Book video series on Ehow.com. The video series is made up of 16 videos with subjects ranging from the initial concept to marketing your completed books. Some of the things he discusses are the materials you need to get started, Inking, drawing, lettering and he even covers comic conventions.

Mark Poulton’s videos are pretty short, each running about 1 and a half minutes so it won’t take too much time to watch. Being so short in length, there is not too much detail in each video but he covers the basics to give you a starting point. While many of us might have seen the credits in the beginning of a comic before, now you will have a pretty good idea of what each person does.

Mark does a great job by also giving his opinions about today’s industry and what he has done when working on his own projects such as Koni Waves. I was pretty amazed at some of the computer work, especially talking about the script, lettering and coloring (that’s because I personally can’t draw but can handle those) and his advice about being original and doing it for the love. Like anything in art, if you do it without passion, people will know.

Mark Poulton is the Vice President of Operations for Arcana Comics and the writer and co-creator of Koni Waves, which he mentions in his videos. Mark is in the process of working on two new creator owned series, Squirt and Club Vampire, upcoming series – H.R. Pufnstuf and Smash: Brigade as well as co-writing a new Demonslayer series with Marat Mychaels. So he does have inside knowledge of the field that I really think that those of us looking for some free direction should listen to. While we missed Mark at Wizard World in Philly earlier this year, he’ll be at the San Diego Con on International Day only signing his new book, Daddy’s Little Girl, featuring March ‘09 Playmate Jenn Pershing (yes, she’ll be there too!), let’s hope that he also makes an appearance at the New York show in October!!!

If you have the desire to make your own comic books, I suggest giving these videos a look. They are not long but you’ll learn something and have something to start with to go along with your idea.
