Miss March Talks Daddy’s Little Girl and Velvet Rope @ Playboy.com!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Current Miss March, Jenn Pershing, recently mentioned the two Arcana Comics projects, Daddy’s Little Girl and Velvet Rope, she’s involved in on her blog over at Playboy.com:

“Just because the blog is ending for me, doesn’t mean the communication between my fans and me is ending. Everyone can definitely keep in touch with me on my MySpace page; it’s the only place I add fans (www.myspace.com/pershlady). I can also be found as the character Bryn Tiltion in the comic Daddy’s Little Girl. Before I even started thinking about doing Playboy—around a year ago—some friends of my husband at Rough Sketch Studios were looking to draw a comic and they needed a main character to draw from, so I kind of posed for some photos, like crazy things the girl would be doing in the comic. They found that I was really easy to draw and actually made me the main character. A preview of the comic can be found in Velvet Rope, a collection of comics. I should be making an appearance this summer at the comic book convention Comic-Con in San Diego, California. Since my friends are the creators of the comic, I’m super-excited to support them in this endeavor.”

Corrective Measures @ AV Club!

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Grant Chastain makes some overly familiar choices in his graphic novel Corrective Measures (Arcana)—the lines taken from Watchmen and The Killing Joke, the formal-voiced Muslim prison leader and hot, conflicted infirmary head reminiscent of characters from Oz. He makes some odd ones, as well—early on, it’s explained that the supervillains in the book’s maximum-security prison are controlled by collars that nullify their powers, and yet he shows people using those powers, albeit in minor, non-destructive ways. Which leaves the parameters of the situation way up in the air. Still, the book is a solid drama about a little-considered aspect of the superhero world, sort of a parallel Gotham Central where unpowered guards attempt to ride herd over the worst supervillains their world has to offer, and the new head of the violent crimes wing debates how he’s going to handle his new position.
