Ezra: Evoked Emotions #2 @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I went into the second issue of Ezra wishing that I didn’t have to read it – the first issue left a sour taste in my mind. HOWEVER, I’m glad I did read it! The second issue is significantly better than the first, improving on many of the negative things I stated about the original.

Corrective Measures @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Where do super villains go when the good guys catch ‘em? Well they go to San Tiburon Federal Correctional Institution of course. Wow that was definitely a mouthful, maybe they should just rename it to “Super Jail”. Nah….

Corrective Measures is the HBO show Oz on steroids… errr superpowers as it were. Not a whole lot of super powers are actually used in the title though as a result of the restraining necklaces that the inmates wear to nullify their powers and provide a little shock treatment if the occasion arises.

All in all, the book was good. The art was well drawn and the storyline was decent. The title is geared toward more of an adult audience, with an abundance of swearing and racist comments from inmates or prison guards, etc and probably not something you want your kid reading, but you probably wouldn’t let your kid watch Oz either… doesn’t mean it ain’t worth the read. It’s interesting to see how Chastain takes on touchy subjects like racism yet can still make you laugh at witty comments thrown into the conversations.

Kade: Sun of Perdition #1 @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Kade Sun of Perdition #1 is a prelude to the story of Kade, a sort of half human half angel character who hunts demons. Set with the classic “fallen angel” back drop, Kade SOP features some of the most stunning artwork I’ve seen in a long time. The painterly style is rendered in such detail that the visuals themselves will draw you out of the story, and the book becomes more of a still framed story board where the words become irrelevant to how much you enjoy the title.

Kade TPB @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I was impressed with Kade. Never having read anything about Kade or the supporting characters I felt a like I had missed out on some of the history, but overall I thought most of it was explained well enough in the TPB so that I could follow along.

Kade and most of the other characters in the title are pretty badass to say the least.

Eve: Vampire Diva #3 @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Once again, for a series overview, see my review of issue #1, but suffice it to say, this is a well crafted series. Issue #3 picks up where #2 left of without missing a beat, Eve trying to act cool for reality show cameras, while dealing with an unexpected party in her apartment, a younger obnoxious diva crashing the party, and her werewolf ex-boyfriend trying not to “wolf out” in her bedroom, among other things. Needless to say, mayhem ensues. This issue brings the story full circle and has a couple surprises to boot!

Eve: Vampire Diva #2 @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Another outing for our favorite vampire diva (see my review of issue #1 for an “overview” of the series). This time around we get to know Girdron a lot better, which is great, as his “working” relationship with Eve really clicks. This time they bust up a coven, only to discover that Eve’s (supposedly dead werewolf) ex-boyfriend is not really dead. Once that’s resolved Eve comes home to a party that her agent set up to rile up their reality show ratings.

Eve: Vampire Diva #1 @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I may have noted, in a recent review, the rampant trend of Buffy knock off comics coming out as of late. True as it may be, I most certainly have to make an exception for Eve: Vampire Diva, which most certainly falls into this category, but also breaks out to be a quality book in its own right.

Koni Waves/Demonslayer @ Project Fanboy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Evil supernatural tiki gods? Beautiful women? Action? Sounds like fun! And it is. This one-shot builds on an interesting cast of characters, and manages to pull of an interesting and fun story within one issue. The publisher’s blurb says it all, so no sense repeating it down here…

In a time where it seems like every comic coming out plays out the Buffy-esqe vampire themes to death, its a breath of fresh air to see something new like… well.. an evil tiki god!
