Congrats on the new job! I think it is a great move - they seem like a solid group of people, and are putting out some good work. Best of luck!

I appreciate this and it's great to know I'm loved. :)

I'm glad this proved to be helpful and am sorry this was provocative...I do agree it boils down to this though...

I want to publish great stories. I just need to be sure the story is told.

I know what you are going through ... Well, sorta ... I'm putting together my first standup comedy cd, and want the insert to be a comic book based on me and my real life adventures ... Anyhows, it appears that I've found some artists willing to do a couple pages of work for a couple hundred US dollars ... I've put so much money into my cd already, even a couple hundred seems like a lot though ...

I wish YOU the very best in your endeavor ... I truly believe we each have the power to have fruitful crops in our garden of dreams ... Please believe in yourself ... Don't sell yourself short ... Don't give up ... Don't give in ...

YOU are loved ...

Another look into the inner workings of the independant comic industry. I am glad you cleared things up. With all the cancellation I had grow troubled that Arcana might be another indy falling prey to low readership. I am glad that is not the case.

I didn't see your reply as confrontational at all. I'm glad you replied to me too. As I said, I'm hoping that the money will give me a boost but I get the impression it won't cover all the costs, or even come close. I know I have a readership already, there are people already excited about my possible début, but it's just a case of working out how to get published.

It's a thought I've been playing with, to try to cut the story down, but then that in itself goes against your advice. I've written the story out, so it's all about how many issues will I need to do it all rather than either cramming it in or stretching it out. That's still in the planning stage right now and I know I'm new to the whole setting it out and arranging it side of things so I'm still very open-minded about how I'm going to get it done.

Thanks for all the advice though, I really appreciate it.

I'm glad you didn't see it as confrontational...so what if issue 1 only brings in $300? And issue three, which many creators in comics can attest to, brings in just enough money to pay for printing without any profit?

I'm glad this isn't putting you off...it's honest truthful advice/blogging and I know it's not what people want to hear.

Keep going strong and ask for help from people...maybe have the artist defer payments or conceded 'future percentages' for current payments or find a way to tell your story cheaper (aim for three issues instead of six)...just some thoughts...

I honestly haven't given it much thought. I suppose I was hoping for that exactly, for one issue to pay for the next, or at least help towards that cost. In British money (since that's where I hail from), we're talking about 6 issues at roughly £700 each so that's approximately £5000 just for the art. That's a lot of money to me, I'm afraid. But don't even think this is putting me off. Given thought, I can come up with it, but it just means it will be a long time before my work gets even close to being ready for you or any other publisher to see.

I, myself, will openly admit that I am guilty of being TOO anxious to get RIPPED out on the shelves. This being my first professionally published work, Ive been overly excited to share my work with people. But, now that the book is coming out in graphic novel format, I honestly DO feel a since of calm has rushed over me, not in the since that I can slack on the work, but on knowing that I dont NEED to rush any pages knowing that they need to get to the colorist, then the printer within a week.

I understand completely what you're saying and what you want. And I hope that our book hasnt made you feel that way. And if so, I apologize. Keep up these great posts. I enjoy reading them. thanx in advance. -jasn

So...without being challenging or confrontational, please ...how would you ever tell the entirety of the story then? Are you counting on profits from issue 1 to pay for issue 2? The profits from issue 3 to pay for issue 4?
